If, Only is a contemporary dance piece I created for Newport Contemporary Ballet in the fall of 2025. The work delves into the shifting landscapes of attachment, exploring the delicate balance between the patterns that anchor us and those that trap us. Alfonso Peduto's music underpins this piece. I was drawn to his compositional practice with delay transforming repetition into structure. Peduto approaches music with both geometric precision and analytic clarity, using decay, looping, and phase-shifting to generate patterns that evolve with mathematical inevitability.

Within this architecture, unexpected resonances and emotional intensities emerge—moments where structure dissolves into sensation. The piece is a meditation on these tensions—the interplay of logic and feeling, calculation and instinct—revealing how our attachments are shaped not only by the structures we inherit but also by the emotions that exceed them.

Special thanks to Anush Revazyan for introducing me to Alfonso Peduto's music and mapping it out so beautifully. Immense gratitute as well to Dara Capley, Hannah Franz, Kercher, Emily Jerant-Hendrickson, Myles Kercher, Alisa Korkhin, Kevin Higgins, Swathi Maddi, Tal Rothstein, Alexis Tsiramanes, Cassie Wang for movement research in developing this work.
